Chiefs for Gender Equity profile - Professor Mike Brooks

Interim Vice-Chancellor and President, The University of Adelaide

Professor Mike Brooks is the Interim Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide, seconded from his underlying position as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research). He is a leading international researcher in computer vision and image analysis, and his work in intelligent video surveillance has seen wide commercial use in the security and defence industries and has resulted in international awards.

Professor Brooks has served on the boards of the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute and for almost 10 years on the board of National ICT Australia (NICTA), the forerunner of Data61.

Professor Brooks has extensive experience in research leadership and management. He established the University of Adelaide’s five flagship research institutes, and has overseen the University’s rapid rise up the international rankings. He carries responsibility for over 400 PhD and Masters completions per annum.

He is a former chair of the Go8 Committee of Deputy Vice-Chancellors Research, and presently serves on the NHMRC Code Review Committee advising on Australia’s new research integrity code. He has spent 8 years on Australian Research Council grant award panels.


Professor Brooks has published over 120 papers in the field of computer vision, image analysis and surveillance, and has 5000 Google Scholar citations. He is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
