Flexibility is about agility in the workforce for the employer and employee to meet both business and employee needs.
South Australians are expected to work longer and retire later (to the average age of 67 from 2017). South Australia also has the oldest population on the Australian mainland. This means that an increasing number of older South Australians will wish or need to work; and others will need caring from family members, many of whom will be in the paid workforce.
Flexible working arrangements will be increasingly important to help older South Australians and carers participate in the workforce.
The Flexible Workplace Futures project aimed to build on, and improve, flexible workplace arrangements in the South Australian public sector. The project included updating the South Australian public sector flexible workplaces guideline, which provides guidance about flexible work options, and how to improve the way flexible work operates.
The project also developed a number of tools that can be used not only by the public sector, but also by any organisations that are looking to implement, or improve, flexible workplace options.
The tools help organisations to balance the needs of the business with the needs of individuals and teams. Most employees understand that a customer service or the operation of the business unit must continue - discussion, communication, negotiation and trust are all important elements of open, transparent and consistent decision making in relation to requests for flexible work.
In the long term, creating a more flexible, diverse and inclusive South Australian workforce will generate productivity, increase workforce participation and improve workforce culture.
