Staff invited to have their say in parliamentary review
SA Parliament staff are being encouraged to get involved in the independent review of harassment in the Parliament workplace, being conducted by the Acting Commissioner for Equal Opportunity.
This review has been requested by both Houses of Parliament.
Anyone working in Parliament House – including staff and elected members – can participate in the review, which is looking at the handling, reporting and prevention of workplace harassment in Parliament.
“Information about the review and how to contribute is now available on the EOC website,” Acting Commissioner Ms Emily Strickland said. “The involvement of staff and elected members is crucial here.
“Our understanding of the workplace culture in Parliament House is reliant on the information we get from people working there, so their views will be essential in determining how the workplace culture and complaints process can be improved. “Responses can be provided anonymously through an online survey, and information provided through other means - such as written submissions or interviews - will be treated confidentially and will not be attributed to anyone in the final report.”
This is a systemic review. It is not designed to investigate any particular matter.
The review will consider the existing regulatory framework, organisational structure, policies, and procedures that apply to Members of Parliament (MPs) and staff in the parliamentary workplace, as well as best practice in responding to and preventing workplace harassment.
A link to the online survey will be sent from the Equal Opportunity Commission to staff next week, and will be open until the end of the year. Written submissions can be provided by email or post before 15 January 2021, and interviews will be conducted from Monday 14 December into early 2021.

A final report making recommendations will be delivered to the Speaker of the House of Assembly and the President of the Legislative Council next year and published on the Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) website after being tabled in Parliament.
